LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. – The Whitworth men's golf team finished both fourth and sixth on Tuesday at the Lilac Collegiate men's golf tournament at Liberty Lake GC.
With enough players to fill two squads, the Pirates split into an "A" team and a "B" team. Led by Keegan Loo's seventh place finish, the "A" squad took fourth place while the "B" team finished sixth.
The final team scores were: Rocky Mountain (MT) 575, North Idaho Col. 581, CC of Spokane 588, Whitworth A 589, Lewis-Clark State 593, Whitworth B 595, Skagit Valley CC 618, Rocky Mountain B 622, Columbia Basin 653, Olympic CC 665.
Loo shot 70-74 – 144 (+4) to finish tied for seventh place. There was a three-way tie for first place between Reece Nilsen of RMC (71-69 – 140), Nick Roberts of NIC (69-71 – 140) and Travis Hansen of LCSC (67-73 – 140) at even par. Nilsen won a playoff to claim medalist honors.
Derrick Phelps, also playing for the A squad, shot 72-74 – 146 to tie for tenth place with five other players. Also playing on the A team was Jack Ryan O'Neal (76-75 – 151, T33rd), Triston Hartfiel (72-79 – 151, T33rd) and Reilly Hegarty (76-76 – 152, T35th).
Caleb Belton (72-74 – 146) led the B team by tying for tenth place. The rest of the B team was Ryan Brown (74-75 – 149, T23rd), Sam Stiles (75-75 – 150, T26th), Preston Roth (74-78 – 152, T35th) and Elijah Pittser (73-81 – 154, T39th).
This week's tournament marked the only time Whitworth will play locally this fall. It was also a warm up for the Pirates, who will compete at the Northwest Conference Fall Classic this coming weekend in McMinnville, Oregon. The NWC Fall Classic counts as 25% of the final league standings.
