RIDGEFIELD, Wash. – The Whitworth men's golf team closed out the fall portion of its season with a first place finish at the Northwest Conference Fall Classic at Tri-Mountain Golf Course on Sunday.
Entering Sunday with a one-stroke lead over Puget Sound, the Pirates lowered their second round score by 15 strokes to solidify a first place finish.
"We dodged the rain today and it was good to not have to play in the rain," Whitworth head coach Warren Friedrichs said. "Overall, it was fun. It was a fun way to end the fall and get us going through the winter."
Junior Jesse Salzwedel shot 70 in the second round as he moved up to take second place in the player standings. Salzwedel (73-70 – 143) finished one stroke behind Willamette's Ryan Kukula who took medalist honors as he finished two-under par with a 74-68 - 142.
Junior Stephen Plopper (72-75 – 247) and freshman Lyle Rudnicki (80-67 – 147) tied with UPS' Adam Bean for fifth place. Rudnicki's shot the best round of the day with his score of 67, which moved him up 13 places from where he started the day. Freshman Oliver Rudnicki shot 76-74 – 150 to tie for 10th place, while freshman Samson Martinez shot 80-79 – 159 to tie for 26th place.
"Lyle Rudnicki was really good; Stephen Plopper was really good" Friedrichs said. "Jesse (Salzwedel) and Oliver Rudnicki were solid for us."
The final men's team scores were: Whitworth 301-286 – 587, Puget Sound 302-304 – 606, Pacific Lutheran 309-298 – 607, Linfield 318-295 – 613, Whitman 320-293 – 613, Willamette 326-298 – 624, George Fox 315-314 – 629, Lewis & Clark 333-337 – 670, Pacific (Ore.) 337-344 – 681.
The men's team will return to competition in the spring.
