Men's Golf To Compete At PLU Invitational

The men's golf team returns to action this weekend at the two-day PLU Invitational on October 14th and 15th at Chambers Bay golf course.

The PLU Invitational will feature George Fox, Lewis & Clark, Linfield, Pacific, Whitman, Whitworth and Willamette. The teams will tee-off at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday and 8:00 a.m. on Monday.

Earning Honors: Freshman Lyle Rudnicki earned the Northwest Conference Men's Golf Student Athlete of the Week honors after his outstanding performance at the Whitman Invitational. Rudnicki had his lowest scores of the season so far in Walla Walla. He shot a 69 in the both rounds of competition, leading his team to a first place finish at the Whitman Invitational. Rudnicki was three strokes ahead of George Fox's Chris Lumsden and took first place in the player standings with his six-under-par score of 138.

Last Time Out: The Pirates shot their lowest two-day team score at the Whitman Invitational, beating the previous low score from the 2005 NWC Fall Classic by five strokes. The Bucs' scored 287 on the first day and 289 on the second to finish with a team score of 576 that was even with par on the 6,760-yard course. Whitworth finished ten strokes ahead of second place Puget Sound.

All six of the golfers that competed at the Whitman Invitational finished in the top-26. Lyle Rudnicki's score of 138 landed him first in the player standings, while freshman Oliver Rudnicki tied with PLU's Justin Lee for eighth place with a score of 145. Freshman Samson Martinez's 146 tied him with Linfield's Taylor Klopp for 10th place. Junior Stephen Plopper finished 14th with a score of 148, while freshman Stephen Thoen was part of a three-way tie for 19th. Junior Joey DeGroff finished 26th with a score of 154. None of the Pirates shot more than three over par in the second round.

The PLU Invitational will feature many of the same teams that Whitworth faced at the Whitman Invitational, including George Fox, Lewis & Clark, Linfield, PLU and Whitman. The Pirates finished 15 strokes ahead of PLU and Whitman in Walla Walla.

Next Up: Whitworth will have a weekend off from competition and will return to action at the Northwest Conference Fall Classic at Tri Mountain golf course on October 27th and 28th.
