The Whitworth men's golf team will open the season against Lewis-Clark College and Northwest Conference rival Whitman College at the Lewiston Triangular on Saturday.
The team will tee off at noon at the Quail Ridge Golf Course in Clarkston, Wash.
Last weekend, Whitworth had an intrasquad exhibition where eight new freshmen prepared for their debut. In addition to the newcomers, the Pirates return juniors Jesse Salzwedel, and Joey DeGroff. Last season Salzwedel was a First Team All-NWC selection while Degroff was Second Team All-NWC. Whitworth also returns Stephen Plopper, who just missed an all-conference selection.
"The incoming recruiting class is the most talented group we have ever had in the program with eight new freshmen," Whitworth head coach Warren Friedrichs said. "Having Jesse Salzwedel and Joey Degroff return is very helpful with several established performers from last year."
Coming off of a second place finish in the NWC last season, Coach Friedrichs has a few more goals for this season.
"We want to win our conference championship and go to the NCAA Division III National Tournament, as well as win as many individual tournaments as possible," Friedrichs said.
After the Lewiston Triangular, the men's team will travel to Hayden, Idaho for the North Idaho Invitational on September 23-24.
