PENDLETON, Ore. – Jesse Salzwedel finished with a final score of 143 (-1) to earn medalist honors on Sunday at the Northwest Conference Spring Classic men's golf tournament. The event was hosted by Whitman at the Wildhorse Resort Golf Course.
Whitworth finished third as a team, a one-place improvement for the Pirates from their finish at the NWC Fall Classic last October. Both tournaments count 25% toward the final league standings. The final 50% of the standings will be determined at the NWC Tournament in three weeks.
Whitworth was third after Saturday's round and finished third, one stroke behind host Whitman. Linfield rallied from fifth place on the first day to first place in the final standings. Pacific Lutheran, the leader on Saturday, fell to fourth place on Sunday.
The final team scores were: Linfield 310-299 – 609, Whitman 300-315 – 615, Whitworth 303-313 – 616, Pacific Lutheran 299-322 – 621, Puget Sound 304-322 – 626, George Fox 316-321 – 637, Willamette 313-328 – 641, Pacific (Ore.) 333-337 – 670, Lewis & Clark 365-371 – 736.
Salzwedel was in third place on Saturday after a one-under round of 71, but his round of 72 on Sunday was the best of the field in windy conditions. He defeated Whitman's Scott Martin (70-76 – 146) by three strokes and Pirate teammate Stephen Plopper (69-79 – 148) by five strokes. Plopper, the tournament's leader at the halfway point, finished in third place.
This weekend's event shook up the NWC standings. Linfield is now in first place with 15 points, followed by Whitman (13), UPS (12), Whitworth (11), PLU (9), George Fox (6), Willamette (4) and Pacific (2).
Whitworth will host the NWC Tournament on April 21-22 at Canyon Lakes GC in Kennewick. But first the Pirates will play in an NWC Preview event on April 14th at the same course.
