Pirates Tie for Third at PLU Lutes Invite

DUPONT, Wash. – The Whitworth men's golf team showed dramatic improvement in only 48 hours.  The Pirates tied for third place in the PLU Lutes Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at The Home Course.

Jesse Salzwedel led the way by tying for second place individually with a two-day total of 73-76 – 149.

Linfield won the tournament, finishing 13 strokes ahead of Pacific Lutheran.  The final team scores were:  Linfield 300-307 – 607, Pacific Lutheran 312-308 – 620, Whitworth 304-321 – 625, North Idaho 310-315 – 625, Puget Sound 322-309 – 631, Willamette 329-313 – 642, George Fox 327-332 – 659, Pacific (Ore.) 347-337 – 684.

Whitworth was in second place after the first day, but could not sustain that momentum on Sunday.

Alex Fitch of Linfield was the individual medalist after shooting 72-76 – 148.  Salzwedel tied with Linfield's Taylor Klopp (72-77 – 149) for second place.

For Whitworth Stephen Plopper (73-85 – 158) tied for 13th, while Saul Martinez (77-82 – 159) tied for 15thJoey Degroff (81-79 – 160) was the only Pirate to shoot a better score on the second day and he finished tied for 17thChristian Boudreau (82-84 – 166) took 31st place.

The Pirates are off until they head to Arizona for spring break, where they will play a couple of one-day events.
