Whitworth Men Open 2011-12 at WSU Palouse Collegiate
PULLMAN, Wash. - Whitworth officially opened the 2011-12 men's golf season at the Washington State Palouse Collegiate on Monday and Tuesday at Palouse Ridge Golf Club.
With only a week's worth of practice this season the Pirates finished 13th out of 14 schools, most of which were NCAA Division I programs.
The positive news for head coach Warren Friedrichs and his crew is that the team improved significantly over the three rounds of play. Whitworth shot a 317 on Monday's first round, but improved to 308 during Monday's second round. The Bucs then shot an impressive score of 300 on Tuesday at a course that played over 7,300 yards.
Sophomore Jesse Salzwedel led Whitworth with a three-round total of 77-75-72 - 224, tying for 45th place out of 78 total finishers. Fellow sophomore Saul Martinez was 59th after he posted a three-round total of 82-74-73.
Senior Jeff Aly tied for 67th after he scored a total of 81-79-74 - 234 and junior Christian Boudreau went 77-80-81 for a total of 238 (76th). Joey DeGroff (a sophomore) shot 87-89-81 - 257 for 78th place.
Those five, along with sophomore Stephen Plopper who missed this tournament due to an ankle sprain, will play next on October 2-3 when Whitworth hosts its own tournament at the Spokane Country Club. This fall the Pirates will be preparing to post a strong finish at the 2011 Northwest Conference Fall Classic, which takes place Oct. 22-23 at Heron Lakes GC in Portland, Oregon. That tournament counts 25% toward the final conference standings.
