Whitworth Finishes Fourth at NWC Fall Classic

PORTLAND, Ore. - Despite shooting the day's second-best team score behind the hot play of Jesse Salzwedel, the Whitworth men's golf team could not gain any ground on the second day of the Northwest Conference Fall Classic and finished in fourth place on Sunday afternoon at the Heron Lakes Golf Club. The Whitworth women finished in fifth place.

Salzwedel shot the day's best individual round on the Great Blue Course with a three under round of 69. But his two day total was 79-68 - 148, finishing four strokes off of the pace in the final standings and tying for fourth place behind Pacific Lutheran's Dustin Hegge (68-76 - 144).

Salzwedel helped the Pirate men shoot a 302 as a team on Sunday, a ten-stroke improvement over Saturday's round. Whitworth overtook PLU, which started the day in third place, but Whitman shot 297 as a team on Sunday and jumped over both the Lutes and the Pirates. Puget Sound increased its first-day lead over second place Linfield to win by 13 strokes.

The final men's team scores were: Puget Sound 288-305 - 593, Linfield 298-308 - 606, Whitman 315-297 - 612, Whitworth 312-302 - 614, Pacific Lutheran 306-311- 617, George Fox 322-311 - 633, Willamette 327-314 - 641, Pacific (Ore.) 317-326 - 643, Lewis & Clark incomplete.

Jeff Aly shot 78-78 - 156 to tie for 17th place. Christian Boudreau (80-78 - 158) and Saul Martinez (75 - 83 - 158) tied for 22nd place. Stephen Plopper finished tied for 26th after scoring 84-77 - 161.
