Whitworth Wins Own Invitational
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Whitworth men's golf team posted its best-ever total for a round at the Spokane Country Club to claim its own invitational on Monday afternoon. The Pirates shot a 291 (+3) on Monday to finish with a two-day total of 587 (+11) and win by five strokes over second place Puget Sound.
The final team scores were: Whitworth 296-291 - 587, Puget Sound 296-296 - 592, North Idaho 299-295 - 594, Pacific Lutheran 297-305 - 602, Linfield 309-303 - 612, Whitman 309-304 - 313, Willamette 306-311 - 617, George Fox 339-341 - 680, Pacific (Ore.) 343-350 - 693.
Pacific Lutheran's Dustin Hegge, a sophomore, earned medalist honors. His score of 68 (-4) on Sunday was the best round of the tournament and he followed that with a 74 on Monday for a two-round final score of 142 (-2). He finished two strokes ahead of Adam Bean of Puget Sound who shot 73-71 - 144 (E) for runner-up.
Whitworth's Christian Boudreau tied with Linfield's Alex Fitch for third place. The pair shot identical rounds of 72-73 - 145 over the two days of play.
The Pirates were able to pull away from a first-round tie with Puget Sound thanks to three players who had struggled on Sunday. Jeff Aly, who shot 81 on Sunday, fired a 71 on Monday to tie Bean of UPS for the best second round score. Stephen Plopper follow his 81 from Sunday with a 73 on Monday, and Saul Martinez improved from a 77 on Sunday to a 74 on Monday.
Jesse Salzwedel fired a 71-79 - 150 to tie for 8th place, giving Whitworth two players among the top-ten individuals. Martinez tied for 12th, Aly tied for 14th and Plopper tied for 19th individually. Joey Degroff shot 76-82 - 158 to tie for 33rd, but his round of 76 on Sunday helped put Whitworth in position to win as a team.
The Pirates will be back in action next weekend when they tee it up at the North Idaho College Invitational October 9-10 at Avondale GC in Coeur d'Alene.
This fall the Pirates will be preparing to post a strong finish at the 2011 Northwest Conference Fall Classic, which takes place Oct. 22-23 at Heron Lakes GC in Portland, Oregon. That tournament counts 25% toward the final conference standings.
