Pirates Stumble to Fifth Place at NIC Invite
COEUR d'ALENE, Idaho. - The Pirate men continued their up and down fall season with a fifth place finish at the North Idaho College Invitational on Sunday and Monday at Avondale Golf Club.
Whitworth struggled to a fifth place finish only one week after posting two strong rounds to win the Whitworth Invitational at Spokane Country Club.
The Pirates shot 316-308 - 624 to finish in fifth place out of five teams. Only four schools were represented as host NIC used an A and a B squad. The NIC B team actually won the tournament with a score of 303-297 - 600. Rocky Mountain (304-300 - 604) was second and the Community Colleges of Spokane (295-312 - 607) finished third after leading through Sunday's first round. The NIC A team (309-306 - 615).
Casey Faught, playing unattached, won the event with back to back rounds of 70 for a total of 140 (-2).
Saul Martinez shot 77-73 - 150 to finish in a tie for sixth place. He was the only Pirate player in the top-ten. Jesse Salzwedel (76-82 - 158) and Stephen Plopper (82-76 - 158) tied for 18th place. Joey DeGroff (83-77 - 160) was 20th. Christian Boudreau (81-89 - 170) finished 28th.
The Pirates now turn their attention toward a strong finish at the 2011 Northwest Conference Fall Classic, which takes place Oct. 22-23 at Heron Lakes GC in Portland, Oregon. That tournament counts 25% toward the final conference standings.
