NEWBURG, Ore. – Whitworth University held off a second half rally by Whittier College and defeated the Poets 90-76 on the second day of the GFU Bruin Classic.
Leading 24-20 in the first half, Whitworth started to pull away with an 8-0 run that included five points by College. The Pirates led 47-31 at the half by finishing on a 7-2 spurt, sparked by another College three-pointer.
Whittier made a late charge with a 10-2 run of its own, pulling to within 76-70 on three-pointers by Ryan Mendez and Kenyatta Louder. But College answered with a three-point play and a three-point shot to extend the lead back to double digits with 2:45 to play. Kevin Crosno and Kyle Roach then hit back-to-back three-pointers to give the Bucs an 88-70 lead.
College made 8-19 from the field, including 4-12 from three-point range. He was 9-9 at the free throw line and came within two points of his career high. With Roach scoring 18, Jared Christy 16 and Crosno 11 off the bench, Whitworth had four players in double figures. Christy dominated the boards with 16 rebounds and has two double-doubles in as many games this season. Roach led Whitworth with five assists.
Nick Potthoff scored 21 points, while Louder finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead Whittier.
Whitworth will head to San Antonio over Thanksgiving to compete in a tournament at Trinity University.
