Christy Leads Whitworth Over Colorado College

SPOKANE, Wash. – Jared Christy scored 17 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead 9th-ranked Whitworth University to an 85-73 win over visiting Colorado College on Sunday afternoon at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

Ben College also scored 17 points for the Pirates, who improved to 8-0 this season after a seven-day layoff between games.  Five Whitworth players reached double figures in scoring in a game the Pirates led by as many as 21 points in the second half, and for the final 35 minutes of the contest.

Whitworth won despite shooting only 39.4% (26-66) from the field, partly because the Pirates' defense held the visiting Tigers to only 38.7% (24-62) and forced 16 turnovers.

"Anytime a team is coming back off of a break, as a coach you are looking for defensive execution and energy," said Whitworth head coach Matt Logie.  "I thought our guys responded by limiting their shooting percentage and creating turnovers, which led to scoring opportunities on the other end."

Colorado College (3-3) took an 11-8 lead four minutes into the game on a basket by CooXooEli Black.  But Sam Lees answered with a three-pointer to tie the game and the Tigers never led again.  The Pirates led by as many as 13 points in the first half at 37-24 on a Reed Brown three-pointer.  Colorado College cut the margin to six before Whitworth took a 41-33 lead into halftime.

The Pirates scored the first five points of the second half and led by double digits the rest of the way.  College scored inside to give Whitworth its first 20-point lead (65-45) with just under 12 minutes to play.  The Pirates' largest lead was 80-59 with 5:10 to play.

Christy was dominant throughout.  He had seven points and 11 rebounds in the first half and scored 10 of his points after halftime.

"Jared is getting better every week in our system and obviously he did a great job tonight on the glass," Logie said.  "He's such a versatile player in the front court with his passing and shooting ability. We are just beginning to see him play his best basketball."

College went 4-9 from three-point range to lead the Pirates, who made 14 three-pointers in the game.  Jordan Lester added 16 points and dished seven assists for the Bucs.  Lees and Brown each scored 10 points off the bench.

Chris Martin led Colorado College with 19 points, while John Hatch added 16 points.  Black finished with nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

The Pirates will take another extended break for final exams before returning to action on December 19th against Wheaton College.
