PORTLAND, Ore. – Whitworth men’s basketball coach Matt Logie, who played an instrumental role recruiting C.J. McCollum to Lehigh University, was on hand today as the Portland Trail Blazers introduced their 2013 lottery draft pick to the media.
McCollum was selected tenth overall in the first round of the 2013 NBA draft after a standout career at Lehigh, which included a 30-point performance in a second round upset of Duke in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
Logie was the primary recruiting contact for McCollum while an assistant coach at Lehigh, uncovering the raw talent out of GlenOak High School in Canton, Ohio.
“Seeing your players succeed is one of the greatest joys in coaching, and to be able to share in C.J.’s special journey is an amazing experience,” Logie said. “C.J. McCollum was one of the first players whom I connected with as an assistant coach at Lehigh, and to see his journey reach the NBA as a lottery pick by the Portland Trail Blazers is truly a dream come true for everyone involved. C.J. is proof that anything is possible through hard work and dedication, and I know our program at Whitworth can draw from his amazing journey.”
Logie was on hand as McCollum was introduced to Portland area media by Blazers’ GM Neil Olshey and head coach Terry Stotts. Following the press conference Logie joined with McCollum, Olshey and Stotts at a Blazers’ luncheon.
Logie is most excited about continuing a relationship with McCollum that began six years ago and getting to watch his play as an NBA rookie from so close to home.
“I’m ecstatic for C.J. and his family and look forward to following him here in the Northwest!”
