Pirate Pair Earn CoSIDA Academic Honors
SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth men's basketball stars Wade Gebbers and Dustin McConnell have been named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District 8 Division III team recognizing excellence in the classroom and on the basketball floor.
Gebbers is now a two-time academic All-District honoree. A 5-11 senior guard from Brewster, Washington, Gebbers is a Business Management major with a 3.88 GPA. A team captain for the second year in a row, Gebbers is averaging 3.5 assists to go along with 10.6 points per game. He leads the Pirates in three-pointers made this season (33) and in steals per game (1.6).
McConnell is making his first appearance on the Academic All-District 8 squad. The 5-11 junior guard from Clarkston, Washington is an education major with a 3.90 GPA. He is Whitworth's leading scorer this season, averaging 13.7 points per game. He ranks among the Northwest Conference leaders in both three-point percentage (42.4) and free throw percentage (85.0).
The pair has led the Pirates to an 18-1 overall record and 10-0 mark in the NWC this season. Whitworth has a chance to claim its fourth straight NWC championship and sixth in the last seven years. The Pirates are currently ranked 3rd in the D3hoops.com top-25 poll.
The Academic All-District teams are voted on by regional sports information directors. To be eligible for nomination, a player must be a starter or important reserve with a 3.30 cumulative grade point average and of at least sophomore standing.
Both are now eligible to be selected to the Capital One Academic All-America Division III team.
