SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth men's basketball stars Felix Friedt and Wade Gebbers have been named to the Capital One Academic All-District 8 Division III team recognizing excellence in the classroom and on the basketball floor.
Friedt is now a two-time Academic All-District honoree. He carries a 3.97 grade point average through the fall semester as an International Business major. Friedt, a 6-8 senior post from Düsseldorf, Germany, has made a huge impact in the Northwest Conference, twice earning NWC men's basketball Student-Athlete of the Week. He leads the NWC in double-doubles (10) and rebounds per game (9.0) and ranks among the league's top leaders in scoring average (16.8), field goal percentage (59.6) and free throw percentage (81.5).
Gebbers has been voted to the Academic All-District team for the first time. A 5-11 junior guard from Brewster, Washington, Gebbers is a Business Management major with a 3.78 GPA. Gebbers has directed the potent Whitworth attack this season, averaging 3.6 assists to go along with 14.4 points per game. He leads the Northwest Conference in three-pointers made this season (58) and is among the conference's leaders in three-point percentage (44.6).
The pair has led the Pirates to a 16-3 overall record and 9-1 mark in the NWC. Whitworth has a chance to claim its third straight NWC championship this winter and fifth in the last six years. The Pirates are currently ranked 10th in the D3hoops.com top-25 poll.
The Academic All-District teams are voted on by regional sports information directors. To be eligible for nomination, a player must be a starter or important reserve with a 3.30 cumulative grade point average and of at least sophomore standing.
Both are now eligible to be selected to the Capital One Academic All-America Division III team.
