SAN ANTONIO – Felix Friedt posted 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead Whitworth University past Southwestern University at the Trinity University National Invitational Tournament on Thursday afternoon.
Friedt posted his third double-double of the season to help the 8th-ranked Pirates improve to 8-2. Southwestern, also called the Pirates, fell to 1-12.
Whitworth never trailed but the Bucs had trouble shaking Southwestern in the first half. Idris Lasisi drained a three-pointer to give Whitworth a 21-12 lead just over seven minutes into the game. But Southwestern got within five points twice in the first half, the final time coming on a short jumper by James Davenport that made the score 27-22. Whitworth closed the half with a 36-27 lead after shooting 40% in the period. Lasisi led the Pirates in the half with 12 points.
Then the Bucs' shooting touch, which had been missing for most of the last four games, came back in a big way in the second half. Whitworth outscored Southwestern 61-36 after halftime by making 68% (21-31) of its shots from the field and 67% (8-12) from three-point range. Friedt scored 19 of his points in the second half and Wade Gebbers made 4-5 from three-point range after halftime to help the Bucs pull away.
Friedt made 6-8 from the field, but did most of his damage at the free throw line where he went 12-13 as the smaller Southwestern players struggled to play defense against him. He also led the Pirates with five assists, kicking passes out to open teammates to make three-point shots.
Lasisi finished with 17 points, Gebbers had 15 and Robbie Douglas came off of the bench for 12 points.
Logan Hurley was the only Southwestern player to reach double figures and he finished with 16 points and shared team-high honors with four rebounds.
Notes: The 97 points is a season-high for the Pirates, the most since Whitworth scored 115 points in a win over Willamette last February… Whitworth is now 1-1 all-time against Southwestern and the Pirates finished 1-1 at the Trinity National Invitational… Robbie Douglas hit a career high with his 12 points.
Coming Up: Whitworth till take on Calvin College (Mich.) on December 29th in a game that will be played at Mercer Island High School. Whitworth head coach Matt Logie is a graduate of MIHS and he led the Islanders to a pair of state championships.
