Pair of Pirates Named Academic All-District

SPOKANE, Wash. – Jake DeGooyer and Brodrick Hirai have been voted to the 2012-13 CoSIDA NCAA Division III Academic All-District VIII Football Team by a vote of regional sports information directors.

DeGooyer, a senior WR, is a biology major with a 3.41 grade point average.  He ranks among the leaders in the Northwest Conference with 65 pass receptions for 917 yards with eight touchdowns.  It is his first year on the Academic All-District team.

Hirai, a junior DT, is also a biology major (pre-medicine) with a 3.85 GPA.  He has 32 tackles this season, including 2.5 for losses of eight yards.  He has been a starter on Whitworth's defensive line for two seasons and has made the Academic All-District team for the second time.

The NCAA Div. III Academic All-District VIII teams are selected from players at schools in the Northwest, California, Texas and Iowa. The players are nominated and selected by members of CoSIDA. To be eligible for nomination, a player must be a starter or important reserve with a 3.30 cumulative grade point average and of sophomore standing. Whitworth nominated seven players in 2012, but only DeGooyer and Hirai were selected to the final team. There were more than 120 nominees for the 25-player team.

This is the second year that the CoSIDA Academic All-District teams were broken down by division.

Both DeGooyer and Hirai are now eligible for selection to the 2012-13 Division III Academic All-America football team.
