L&C Edges Whitworth to Avoid Sweep

PORTLAND, Ore. – Lewis & Clark rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to defeat visiting Whitworth 3-2 and avoid a sweep of the Northwest Conference baseball series on Saturday afternoon.

The Pirates fell to 14-15 overall and 9-9 in the NWC after taking both games on Friday.  The Pioneers are now 7-24, 4-14.

Tyler Bailey gave Whitworth a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run home run to left field.  It was his second home run of the season.

Sean Shephard's RBI single in the third pulled L&C within 2-1.  The Pioneers took the lead with two runs in the fourth.  Ryan Erickson scored on a sacrifice fly and Jacob Serafini added an RBI single with two outs.

Neither team scored the rest of the way against solid pitching.  Andrew Yarek improved to 2-6 with seven strong innings for the Pioneers.  He allowed two runs on six hits, while striking out six and walking three.  Austin Conniff picked up the save with two innings of hitless relief.

Matthew Young fell to 3-4 for Whitworth after giving up three runs on seven hits in five innings of work.  Brett Thomas tossed the final two innings for the Bucs, allowing only two hits.

Whitworth will return home to host Linfield College in a three-game series next weekend at Merkel Field.
