Spencer Locati, Whitworth senior infielder, will be spending his summer in Panama and Guatemala on a trip that will allow him to fine tune his baseball skills while using sport as a platform to reach others for Christ.
He will play for an Athletes in Action (AIA) team that will compete against a number of local teams including national and junior national teams from Panama and Guatamala. On off days, the team will host a number of camps and clinics.
"What makes the trip special for me is that my siblings are from Guatemala," Locati said. "I'm excited to learn about new cultures and minister to people."
Each day will also include opportunities for team members to share in fellowship with one another and share how God is working in their lives.
Whitworth Baseball has partnered with AIA in the past by sending players to play for the Rochester Ridgemen of the New York Collegiate Baseball League. Pirates have also been placed with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Niagara Power of the same league. These teams allow student-athletes to improve as players on the diamond while maturing as men in their walk with Christ.
Locati's Pirate career has been plagued by injuries. This summer is a great opportunity for him to get back into the swing of things and prepare himself for his senior season.
"Watching the joy that these kids have when they pick up a baseball reminds me why I've continued to stick with the game, through it all," Locati said.
