The Pirates improved to 9-6 overall and 3-5 in the NWC while GFU dropped to 5-12, 4-8.
The Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third after Andrew Reichenbach led off the inning with a single and came around to score on a fielder's choice.
But Whitworth took the lead in the next half inning. Nelson drilled a two-run double to center field with two outs, driving in Nicholas Nerud and Bird.
George Fox cut the lead in half in the bottom of the sixth on Zachery Muenster's RBI double. But Whitworth retook a three-run lead on McGowan's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning that drove in Daniel Casanova. Casanova had led off the inning with a single and a stolen base.
Matthew Young (1-2) pitched six strong innings to earn his first win as a Pirate. He allowed two runs on six hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Darren Crosby picked up his first save with three innings of relief. He pitched to only six batters in the final two innings.
Liam Kent (0-1) gave up four runs on six hits in five innings for George Fox.
Bird finished the game 3-4 at the plate, getting almost half of Whitworth's eight hits.
After playing their first 15 games away from Merkel Field, including a "home" series against Willamette at Pacific Lutheran earlier in March, the Pirates should get to host PLU at Merkel Field in a four game series this coming weekend.
