PORTLAND, Ore. – Spencer Ansett dominated on the mound and Whitworth batters posted season-highs for runs and hits in the Pirates' 13-3 win at Lewis & Clark on Monday evening.
The win gave Whitworth (8-18 overall, 5-10 NWC) a 2-1 victory over the Pioneers (9-17-1, 3-12) in the Northwest Conference baseball series.
Ansett (2-2) went seven innings, allowing one run on only four hits. He struck out three batters and walked two while lowering his season ERA to 3.43. Taylor Isadore and Jason Renner each threw an inning of relief.
Nick Motsinger and Jeremy Druffel each had three of the Pirates' season-high 16 hits. Justin Liu drove in a season-high three runs and Matt Nelson hit his second home run in as many games in the second inning.
The Pirates broke open a 1-1 pitchers' duel with six runs in the fifth inning. Liu drove in his first run of the game in the inning and Garret Hughes added a two-run single in the rally.
Whitworth stretched the lead to 10-1 with three more runs in the sixth. Joshua Davis and Druffel opened the inning with back-to-back doubles. Liu added his second RBI.
Matthew Cathcart and Ben Beck each had two hits for L&C. Aaron Landecker (1-6) took the loss for L&C after allowing six runs on five hits and five walks in 4.1 innings.
The Pirates will host Pacific University in a three-game NWC series next weekend at Merkel Field.
