Pirates Return to Action in Idaho

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth baseball team returns to action this weekend with a four-game series at the College of Idaho in Caldwell.  The Pirates have not played since Feb. 7-9 in Southern California.

Live Results:  There are no live links (stats or video) available from Caldwell this weekend.  However, there will be frequent updates posted on the C of I twitter feed (@CoyoteAthletics).

The Pirates:  Whitworth is 2-2 following the four-game trip to California.  While the Pirate bats got off to a very hot start, the pitching and defense had some early-season jitters.

Whitworth took two of three games at Pomona-Pitzer, posting 28 runs against the Sagehens.  The Bucs then dropped the one game at Occidental 8-7 after taking an early 6-1 lead.

Hot Hitting:  Whitworth hit .299 as a team in California with 15 doubles in four games.  The Bucs plated 35 runs.  Tyler Pfeffer led the way, hitting .471 with a home run and seven RBIs.  Thomas Wakem batted .444 with three doubles and a homer.

Clean it Up:  The Bucs will look to clean up some sloppy play on defense.  Whitworth committed 11 errors in the four games, including eight at Occidental – which led directly to the Tigers' comeback victory.

Finding the Zone:  Whitworth pitchers were effective overall in California, but struggled at times finding the strike zone.  The Pirates walked 33 batters in 34.1 innings pitched and hit eight batters for a total of 41 free passes.  Carson Blumenthal had Whitworth's best start on the mound, allowing one run on five hits in five innings, but did not get a decision at Pomona-Pitzer.  He came out of the game because Whitworth coaches kept the starters on a short pitch count.  Taylor Isadore was strong in relief, posting a 1.50 ERA in three appearances with one save.

The Coyotes:  College of Idaho Is 4-4 this season.  The Coyotes opened the season Feb. 2-3 in California and went 4-0.  They played last weekend in rainy Portland and went 0-4, dropping two games each to Concordia and George Fox.

C of I is hitting .220 as a team with 3B Mitch Skaggs hitting .417 with ten RBIs.  The 'Yotes have a team ERA of 4.85.

Last Time:  Whitworth's last meetings with C of I came in 2011.  The Coyotes took three of four games in the series played in Caldwell, Idaho.

Coming Up Next:  Whitworth makes a rare return trip to California Feb. 28 – March 2.  The Pirates will play three games at Whittier and a single contest at California Lutheran.
