WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Justin Weeks threw eight strong innings to lead Whitman to a 9-0 win over visiting Whitworth in the Northwest Conference season finale for both schools on Sunday afternoon at Borleske Stadium.
The Pirates (13-23-1 overall, 8-16 NWC) saw their three-game losing streak come to an end. Whitworth will finish the season next weekend at the Inland Cellular Tournament hosted by Lewis-Clark State College.
The Missionaries (15-21, 8-16) jumped to a big lead early on after scoring six runs in the second against Pirate starter Carson Blumenthal. Jimmy Madden had a two-run double and Kyle Buckham added an RBI single in the rally.
Whitman added two runs in the fifth, including an RBI single by Chris Andrews and one by Buckham. The Missionaries' final run came in the eighth inning on another RBI hit by Andrews.
Weeks limited the Whitworth bats to five hits over 8.0 innings while improving to 4-5. Nathan Jewett had two of the Bucs' hits.
Whitman finished with 17 hits, including three by Andrews and three by Buckham. Blumenthal fell to 4-5 after he allowed six runs on eight hits over 3.0 innings. Taylor Isadore gave up two runs in 2.0 innings and Spencer Ansett allowed one run on five hits in 2.0 innings. Jason Renner threw the last inning in relief.
Whitman and Whitworth finish tied for seventh in the final conference standings.
