TYLER, Texas – Carson Blumenthal's seven strong innings led Whitworth to a 6-2 win over Austin College in a non-conference baseball game on Saturday, but Texas-Tyler's Cayden Cunniff singled home the winning run for his Patriots in a 5-4 victory over the Pirates in the nightcap of the Clements Fluids Classic.
Whitworth is 5-4-1 heading into another contest with UT-Tyler on Sunday.
Game 1 – Whitworth 6, Austin 2
Carson Blumenthal improved to 2-0 this season after he allowed two runs on five hits in 7.0 innings of work. He struck out five and walked four batters.
Whitworth scored single runs in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings to take a 4-0 lead over the Kangaroos (3-14).
Austin got a run back in each of the sixth and seventh innings, but Jason Renner pitched two strong innings of relief, allowing no runs on one hit to pick up his first save of the season.
The Pirates added a pair of unearned runs in the ninth for the final margin.
Game 2 – UT-Tyler 5, Whitworth 4
The Patriots (10-3) scored the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to claim the see-saw battle with the Pirates.
UT-Tyler scored single runs against Whitworth starter Dan Scheibe in the first and second innings to open a 2-0 lead. But Scheibe settled down, holding the Patriots scoreless over the next five innings.
UT-Tyler went back up 4-3 in the eighth. The Bucs tied the game in the ninth on Tyler Pfeffer's double. But the Patriots loaded the bases against Spencer Ansett in the bottom of the inning with two outs. Cunniff singled to center field to drive in the winning run.
Scheibe went eight innings on the mound, allowing four runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and a walk. Ansett took the loss to fall to 0-1. Derek Miller got the win for the Patriots with one inning of relief behind a strong start from Chance Cotton.
Pfeffer had two hits and an RBI for the Pirates. Cunniff had two hits and drove in two runs for UT-Tyler.
