PASCO, Wash. – Danny Jordan, Justin Liu and Erik Nikssarian each drove in a pair of runs to lead Whitworth to a 12-5 win over Lewis & Clark in the Pirates' opener at the Swing Into Spring baseball classic on Friday night at Gesa Stadium.
Jason Renner threw six strong innings to help Whitworth improve to 2-2-1 this season. The Pioneers dropped to 0-4.
Lewis & Clark jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to two unearned runs. Mike Kinkenon had an RBI single for the Pioneers in the inning.
Whitworth answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Jordan's RBI single got the Pirates on the board and Josh Davis scampered home on a double steal.
Nikssarian's sacrifice fly tied the game in the second inning. The Pirates added three more in the third, including Jordan's second RBI single of the game, to take a 6-3 lead.
Whitworth broke the game open with three more runs in the fifth inning. Lui's infield single drove in Davis. Two more runs scored after an error at third base.
Renner won his first game by throwing six solid innings. He allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Michael Woodkey threw two innings and allowed two runs. Bryan Noble tossed a scoreless ninth.
Jordan finished 3-4 at the plate while Liu and Skyler Lookabill each had a pair of hits.
Mike Hathaway threw the first five innings for L&C and fell to 0-2. Bradley Lezak had two hits and two RBI's to lead the Pioneers at the plate.
Whitworth will play Willamette on Saturday at 4:00 pm as the Pirates continue the tournament in Pasco.
