Pirates Picked First in NWC Poll, Ranked 5th in D3baseball.com Rating

SPOKANE, Wash. – After a breakthrough season in 2012 that might have caught opponents by surprise, the 2013 Whitworth University baseball team will catch no one off guard.

The Pirates head into the 2013 season picked first in the Northwest Conference preseason coaches' poll and ranked fifth in the D3baseball.com top-25.

Whitworth returns four starting pitchers and several key position players from a team that went 31-16-1 overall and shared its first NWC title since 1991 with a 19-5 record in 2012.  The Pirates went into the season picked fifth in the 2012 coaches poll and hadn't made a post-season appearance of any kind since 1992.

All-American outfielder Tyler Pfeffer will lead the returning positions players, which also include All-NWC infielders Nick Motsinger and Gerhard Muelheims.  Starting pitcher Dan Scheibe, who was a First Team All-NWC honoree and the D3baseball.com West Third Team All-Region selection as a freshman, leads the pitching staff, which includes fellow sophomores Spencer Ansett, Carson Blumenthal and Nick Scourey.  All four won at least one NCAA tournament game last season.

Whitworth will open the season on February 8th with a game at Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks, California.
