PASCO, Wash. – Whitworth opened the Swing into Spring Baseball Classic with a 14-5 win over Lewis & Clark College on Friday afternoon at Gisa Stadium.
While the game was between Northwest Conference competitors, it counts as a non-conference contest.
The Pirates (3-2) opened a 10-0 lead midway through the game by scoring five runs in the bottom of the second inning and four more in the bottom of the fifth. Those ten runs came on only five hits as L&C starting pitcher Mike Hathaway walked eight batters and hit three others.
Spencer Ansett (2-0) started on the mound for the Pirates and picked up his second win in as many starts by giving up three runs on 10 hits. He struck out eight batters and did not allow a walk.
The Pirates will play Puget Sound and Corban on Saturday at the Swing into Spring Classic, which is taking place at the home of the Tri-Cities Dust Devils.
