LOS ANGELES – Tyler Pfeffer homered twice to lead Whitworth to a come-from-behind 4-2 win at Occidental College in a non-conference baseball game on Friday afternoon.
The win was the first of the season for the Pirates (1-1) and it was the first loss of the season for the Tigers (2-1).
Pfeffer's first home run of the season in the sixth inning pulled Whitworth to within 2-1. His two-run shot to left-center field in the top of the eighth drove in Kevin Valerio and gave the Pirates a 3-2 lead. JR Jarrell followed with a solo home run in the next at-bat for an insurance run.
Spencer Ansett went 7.1 innings, allowing two runs on ten hits, to pick up a victory in his Whitworth debut. Fellow freshman Jason Renner allowed only an infield hit in the final 1.2 innings to pick up the save.
Pedro Aldalpe led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run to get Occidental on the board. Scott Hong followed with a double and scored on a ground ball two batters later for a 2-0 Tigers' lead.
The Pirates finally got to Oxy starting pitcher Tyler Eyrich in the eighth when Valerio led off with a double. Mitch Margolis (0-1) relieved Eyrich and gave up home runs to Pfeffer and Jarrell in the next two at-bats.
Valerio, Pfeffer and Jarrell were joined by Nick Motsinger with two hits each.
Whitworth and Occidental will complete the three-game series with a double-header on Saturday, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
