Pomona-Pitzer Rolls Whitworth in Season Opener

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Pomona-Pitzer scored 11 runs in the fifth inning to roll past visiting Whitworth 19-2 in the Pirates' baseball season opener on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Sagehens, who went 18-3 at home last season and are expected to challenge for the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletics Conference title this season, improved to 1-0-1. 

Tyler Pfeffer had a double, a run scored and an RBI for the Pirates, who managed six hits against four Pomona-Pitzer pitchers.  Nick Motsinger had two of those Whitworth hits.

Motsinger, Paul Miller, Dan Scheibe and Justin Liu started the first games they played in their Pirate careers.

Scheibe started on the mound for Whitworth and gave up six runs (five earned) on seven hits in 4.2 innings. 

The worst of the damage was done in the fifth inning when the Sagehens scored 11 runs on only five hits.  Whitworth pitchers walked or hit five batters in the inning.

Nick Gentili went 2-3 with three RBIs and five runs scored to lead Pomona-Pitzer offensively.  Travis Rooke-Ley started on the mound for the Sagehens and earned the victory after allowing only a single hit and no runs in 5.0 innings of work.

Whitworth will try to pick up its first victory of the season on Friday afternoon at Occidental.
