Whitworth Athletic Facilities
The Pine Bowl/Boppell Track: First used in the late
1930's, the Whitworth Pine Bowl has been home to Pirate football
and track teams for over 60 years. Majestically surrounded by
beautiful Pines (thus the name), the stadium added grass
picnic/seating areas north and south of the grandstand in 2002. In
the 1960's the permanent stands were poured and constructed, along
with the press box. In the mid-90's the track was reconstructed and
named in honor of Chuck Boppell, a former athlete and current Board
of Trustees member. The tartan surface is first class and has been
host to numerous college, high school and youth track meets
since.
The Whitworth Fieldhouse: The home of Whitworth basketball
and volleyball, the Fieldhouse is a spacious, multi-purpose
facility that also houses the university's Sports Medicine
department. The seating capacity for basketball is 1,620 and the
Fieldhouse has provided the Pirates a significant home-court
advantage over the years with large and noisy crowds. In the
winter, baseball, softball and track and field use the facility for
practice. In 1980 the Whitworth Fieldhouse was the site of the AIAW
Division III Volleyball Championships. The following year the
building hosted the AIAW Division III Basketball Tournament. More
recently the Whitworth Fieldhouse has played host to a pair of NCAA
Division III regional volleyball tournaments (2002, 2005).
Diana Marks Field: The Diana Marks Softball Field
offers the highest quality in athletic fields. Opened for softball
in the spring of 2000, the complex includes a complete softball
field with in-ground dugouts, batting cages, and bleachers. The
facility has its own state-of-the art scoreboard and a shared
press-box with the Whitworth Soccer Field for filming/viewing above
and concessions stand below. The facility includes a team
changing room and spectator restrooms conveniently located adjacent
to the bleachers. Click here for a
virtual tour of Diana Marks Field.
Whitworth Soccer Field: The Whitworth Soccer Field opened
in the Fall of 2000, boasting one of the best natural grass playing
surfaces in the western region. It plays at 120x75 with
international style goals, sheltered team benches, a
state-of-the-art scoreboard, press box and video tower making it a
place to truly enjoy playing and watching soccer. The facility
includes a team changing room and spectator restrooms conveniently
located adjacent to the field. The Whitworth soccer field has
hosted many NCAA Division III tournament contests, including the
2005 Sectional Rounds.
Whitworth also has an excellent, and separate, natural grass practice facility that is 150x74 and sets in an environment that is very conducive to teaching, learning and playing. Click here for a virtual tour of the Whitworth soccer facilities.
Whitworth Aquatic Center: Completed in the spring of
1984, the Whitworth Aquatics Center hosts the Pirate swimming
teams. The pool is a six-lane, 40-yard course with a movable
bulkhead, designed to allow for a deep-water racing course. The
pool hosted the 1986 NAIA Championships. The Northwest Conference
championships have been held at the facility four times, as have
numerous age-group competitions. A recent addition to the Aquatics
Center area has been the Scotford Fitness Center. Filled with a
wide array of circuit-training and cardiovascular exercise
implements, the Scotford Fitness Center is available to Whitworth
students for a nominal fee.
Merkel Field: Located across from the back of the
Fieldhouse, Merkel Field is home to the Whitworth Baseball team. A
beautiful setting for a sunny spring day of baseball, the facility
has undergone several recent upgrades. Bleachers have been added
and reconstructed to include seats immediately behind home plate.
The backstop has been moved back away from home plate to provide a
safer amount of foul territory. And a full-service concession stand
is now available.
Scotford Tennis Center: The newest Whitworth facility includes the Ross Cutter tennis courts and was completed in 2005. The center includes three outdoor courts and three courts that occupy an all-weather tennis bubble.
