Melinda Larson takes over as Whitworth’s Interim Director of Athletics for the 2013-14 academic year. Larson has served the Pirates’ athletics department since returning as Assistant Athletic Trainer and Instructor in the fall 1995.
Larson advanced to Head Athletic Trainer in 1998 and in 2011 she took over as the Athletic Training Education Program Director of Whitworth’s award-winning sports medicine department.
In her role as an ATC, Larson specialized in mild traumatic brain injury and soccer injury epidemiology. As a professor, Larson’s specialty was in pathophysiology and therapeutic modalities. She was awarded the National Athletic Trainers Association Outstanding Service Award in 2010, where she has made several presentations at the organization’s annual convention.
Larson gained international teaching experience in Guatemala with Athletes In Action and leads a study abroad program for Health Science students at the Whitworth Costa Rica campus.
Prior to returning to Whitworth, where she was an undergraduate and varsity basketball player who graduated in 1992, Larson earned her M.S. in Health Education from Florida International University in 1994. She then served as Assistant Athletic Trainer and Instructor at the University of Alabama-Birmingham in 1994-95.
As the Interim Director of Athletics, Larson will oversee the entire operation of Whitworth’s 20-sport varsity program.
